Charles Barrowclough

It’s a long, winding career trail that Charles Barrowclough has traveled to reach the ranks of distinguished regional environmental experts in land preservation, conservation-land acquisition and resource management.

Currently serving as executive director of Treasured Lands Foundation, Charles raises donations, secures endowments and pursues grants to purchase and maintain conservation land in Martin County. Commanding an annual operating budget of $280,000 to $5 million, he also helps support and create outdoor and parks programs. Many such programs are threatened with government budget cuts, so Charles finds private benefactors as investors, keeping popular programs intact while liberating taxpayers from additional burdens.

A native of New York, Charles moved to Martin County in 1972. A graduate of Florida Institute of Technology with degrees in Oceanographic Science and Environmental Science and Engineering, the husband and father of two sons applied his education to obtain vast and varied experience in emerging environmental philosophies, innovative techniques and pioneering practices.

Conducting scientific research on Florida terrain as diverse as the dry prairie of Myakka River State Park to the vibrant coral reefs of the Keys, he’s contributed to the preservation of 65,000 acres of native Florida habitat. Meanwhile, he amassed impeccable credentials with leading environmentalists.

Serving as a consultant to land owners on trust issues, resource management plans and conservation easements, he’s also demonstrated the ecological and socioeconomic benefits of sound environmental management to a host of leaders in business, agriculture and industry.

Along the way he honed a deft touch for navigating the bureaucratic labyrinth of environmental grants and funding sources, securing investment resources that proved immensely beneficial to the public.
